What is Lymphoedema?
Lymphoedema is a condition where fluid builds up in the body’s tissues, causing swelling. It most commonly affects the arms or legs but can occur in other areas of the body.
The lymphatic system normally helps drain excess fluid and supports the body’s immune system. When the lymphatic system isn’t working effectively, fluid can accumulate and cause ongoing swelling, heaviness, tightness or changes in the skin.
Lymphoedema can develop because of a problem with the lymphatic system itself (primary lymphoedema), or as a result of another condition or treatment (secondary lymphoedema). It can occur following surgery, cancer treatment, injury or other conditions that affect the lymphatic system.
While lymphoedema is generally a long-term condition, it can be effectively managed. Physiotherapy can play an important role in reducing swelling, improving movement and comfort, and helping you develop strategies to manage your lymphoedema in everyday life.
